Don’t forget Book Harvest!  Anna Herring, one of our UNC college students, is collecting new and gently used children’s books during the month of February for Book Harvest, a non-profit organization that gives books away to children from low-income households.  Collection bins are available in the Gathering Area so you can donate. For more information about Book Harvest, see

Mission OpportunityHave you ever wondered how you could be in mission with Christ? A life-changing opportunity is available to individuals and groups at UBC—the Quiche Health and Training Center in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala! Through a partnership between the Yates and Raleigh Baptist Associations, NC Baptist Men, and the Quiche Baptist Association, John Whitley will help lead a work team from July 7-14. The work is primarily landscaping and light construction. Previous skills are not required. The Mission Ministry Team has some monetary assistance, and additional fundraising is planned for the spring. Currently, all spaces are reserved for UBC members but the trip will be opened to people outside of UBC in late January. Please prayerfully consider this life-changing opportunity and talk to John if you would like to join the team or have questions. What a rewarding working vacation!

Join in UBC's new initiative:

Retire the Mortgage by 2015

If you are especially enthusiastic about becoming debt-free, you should prayerfully consider volunteering to serve on a new ad hoc committee to guide UBC's efforts to retire the mortgage. For more information, please contact Steve Harward by email.

Renovating and Renewing Update

Great things have happened and great things are soon to come. Thanks to your continuing faithfulness and commitment to R&R, we have completed the removal of the Lexan coverings and repaired several stained glass windows in the Sanctuary. You may not have noticed the newly finished hardwood floors in the classrooms above the Memorial Chapel — go take a look, they’re beautiful! Our next R&R project is new lighting the Sanctuary.  We hope to complete this project by mid-summer next year. Is your R&R pledge up-to-date?

And there is more. Due to the generous thanksgiving gifts we receive from the Chapel Hill Chinese Christian Church each year, we have painted and installed new lighting fixtures in the Assembly Room where they meet.

FYI

A new Building Maintenance Company is now cleaning the entire UBC facility each Friday evening.

Important!  Please notify the church office of any use of the facility on Fridays (meetings, events, etc.) so the cleaning company can be notified.

Wednesday Night Fellowship Dinner

Wednesday, February 8th at 5:15 pm

On the first Wednesday night of each month dinner will be prepared for purchase by our kitchen team. On the other Wednesday nights — like this Wednesday, February 8th — please bring your meal from home, or pick up something on your way to church, or pop into one of the many fine eateries on Franklin Street to get something to go, and join us in the Great Hall to eat together. Children and Adult programs begin as usual at 6pm.

Wednesday nights are a wonderful fellowship opportunity to gather around the table in the Great Hall for visiting and sharing within our community of faith.

As a reminder, the following downtown merchants have enthusiastically agreed to offer UBC members a 20% discount on Wednesday evenings for all take-out orders:

Buns Restaurant · Sakura Japanese Restaurant · New York Pizza

· Butternut Squash Vegetarian Restaurant ·

For dessert: Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream

Followed at 6:00 pm by Children's Music and Mission Studies, Youth, College, and Adult Bible Study:

"Book of James" in the Memorial Chapel

When they found him,

 they worshiped him,

and presented their gifts to him.

Estimate of giving

If you missed the New Consecration service, you can still participate in this important church-wide emphasis by submitting an Estimate of Giving form located on the UBC web site. Information obtained from this form is completely confidential and will be available only to the church bookkeeper. Your participation in this process not only helps provide a focus for your financial commitment to God's work through University Baptist Church, but it also enables the church to set better income benchmarks for 2012 and develop a reasonable budget plan. Of course, you can always obtain an Estimate of Giving card from the church office and leave your card for the bookkeeper. Either way, please complete your Estimate of Giving soon.  Click here to submit your Estimate of Giving.

YOUTH GROUP and PARENTS!

YOUTH SUPER BOWL PARTY

Sunday, Feb 5th @ 6 pm, at the home of Mary Gregory:

5406 NC 86 S #7, Chapel Hill 27514

Bring a side dish/appetizer OR dessert to share

(think Super Bowl snacks like nachos, dips, wings, etc.)

The game will be on and there will be lots of

 food, fun, and laughter!

Bring friends if you want! See you there!

Mark your calendars (OK, mark Mom and Dad’s calendars). Only one youth meeting in February, which will be Sunday, February 19th at the Pendry household in Durham. We will be doing some new stuff with youth that includes Sunday night Bible study outside the church.

Pull out your fancy duds—it’s time for the

Annual Father-Daughter

Valentine’s Dance

Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 11th 6:30 - 8:30 pm, and prepare to party!

Create a beautiful and cherished memory for only $20 per dad.

Volunteers are needed to help in various ways before, after, and during the dance, and donations of desserts will once again be greatly appreciated to help keep costs down. Be on the lookout for more information on how you can volunteer and how to get your tickets!

February 12th immediately after worship: Grab your honey and lunch from somewhere on Franklin Street and join us for lunch as we eat and fellowship together in a beautifully Valentine decorated room (The Great Hall). We did this last year, and it was a lot of fun. We may crank up a few fun tunes to dance to as well. Chicken Dance anyone? All ages are welcome!

Stewardship. . .

our commitment to care for what God has given us by utilizing our time, talents and financial gifts in support of His church and its ministries. What we do with our talents and resources is our gift back to God.

“Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work.”  (2 Corinthians 9:7-8)

“Jesus summed up the spiritual connection between money and God this way:  ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34).

2012 Offering Envelopes are available for pick up in the hallway outside the church office.

 Alternatives for Giving to UBC

Here are some excerpts from “Ask Dow Jones” by Tom Herman from the November 27th Raleigh News & Observer for your consideration:

Interested in donating to UBC from your IRA?  Current provisions of the IRS tax code permit people who are 70-1/2 years old or older to transfer as much as $100,000 a year directly from an IRA account to one or more qualified charities without having to report any of that money as taxable income. While the donation isn’t taxable, it is also a smart move since the transfer isn’t included in your adjusted gross income. Such a transfer must be made directly to the charity from the IRA. If done properly, the transfer counts toward the taxpayer’s required minimum distribution for this year. If you have further questions, then check with your CPA or accountant. But hurry because it’s unclear if this provision will be available in 2012.

Want to unload stock before year’s end?  Consider donating stock to UBC that you’ve owned for more than a year and that is worth more than you paid for it. That way, you can avoid capital gains tax on the increased value – and you can usually deduct the stock’s fair market value at the time you make your gift. This can be especially smart if you have no idea what you originally paid for a stock years ago since you don’t need that information to take advantage of this provision.

You may specify such gifts to be used toward the operating budget of the church or toward the Retire the Mortgage Campaign.

Stewardship => Tithing => Action

Make your tithing automatic!

It’s easy—all major banks in the area offer secure online bill paying.  Do you still have questions about making your tithing automatic? Ask your bank for a demonstration of their free secure online bill paying program. It only takes a few minutes to set up UBC as a payee, select the frequency and amount of your contribution—your contributions will be received by UBC and recorded as if you had put checks in the collection plate. You maintain control of starting, stopping, and changing your contributions.

In your online banking site, you need to set up University Baptist Church as a Payee (as if you are paying a bill to UBC). Your contributions will be received either by physical check mailed by your bank or by electronic transfer of funds.

Simply use the church’s name and address as the Payee:

University Baptist Church

100 S. Columbia Street

Chapel Hill, NC 27514

Choose how much and how often you’d like to contribute, save your settings, and you’re done! You can always go into the settings and make adjustments if necessary.  Try it—you’ll like it!
